Don’t Listen to the Brady Bunch - Gun Shows Aren't What Gun Control Advocates Say They Are.

If you have ever heard a gun control advocate talk about their cause of choice you’ll hear the term “gun show loophole”. Don’t listen to them, there isn’t a loophole, it’s a personal freedom that they are trying to take away.

The gun grabbers, like the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, use that loophole term to scare you, to conjure images of men wearing name badges that say “Hello! My name is Murdering Gangbanger” purchasing every personal firearm that comes through the door. That just isn’t the case! I would encourage anyone believing in a gun show loophole to actually attend a gun show and look for the murderers, bet you can’t find one very easily.

Better yet, get a gun, imagine that it is one that you own but don’t really want. You can’t see fit throwing it in the metal scrap pile. What could you do with it? Sell it! You could use a dealer who would likely try to resell it. However, because of this resale factor he wants to make a profit so the licensed dealer will only offer about half what its worth. The other option is you could sell it to a friend who will give you a better price. Not if the Brady Bunch gets their way. For them every sale must be completed through a federally licensed firearm dealer. The Brady Campaign leaves no room for the use of common sense and personal discretion, believing that only the government who regulates the gun dealers can make gun sales decisions. Imagine having to go through the Department of Motor Vehicles, that joyous place you get your drivers license, for approval with every vehicle sale. Imagine you have to go through the Department of Agriculture to buy milk

What you will find at a gun show are people, almost all of whom are law abiding citizens, who believe that the freedom to bear arms is an essential part of our constitution. Some of those gun show participants will buy guns looking for a good deal. Some of them are collectors who will never shoot the guns they buy. Others are hunters who feed their family with those firearms. Some, like me, don’t fit into any of those categories easily but just love guns, love shooting and enjoy the personal challenge of target shooting. There are the inevitable few who are unable to legally buy a gun and look for a person to person, in Brady lingo unlicensed, sale. The people fitting into the latter group are few and far between. In fact, a survey of inmates conducted in 1997 found that only 2% of them bought guns used in crimes at a gun show.

Does this 2% of criminals really justify the removal of a freedom to person to person sales for the rest of us? If you think so maybe you should check your bathwater you just threw out for the baby that was in it!
